February 16th

Spent some time this morning getting maps and looking for a way around the higher elevations in New Mexico. No dice. Got to "know when to hold 'em" and this is how it goes. Then we followed some errant routes in Phoenix and finally found the Arizona Canal Bike Path.  We'll be back in the mountains tomorrow. "Don't cry for me Argentina." - I just thought of that song.

This was what we thought was the right path.

It got worse.

And worse.

And then, after going through a few miles of neighborhoods . . .

. . . we found the right one. Phoenix is a very large city and spreads out in all directions. This was the right path, side by side the canal.

I couldn't resist this picture, looking south.

Notice the big square things on the roofs. They look like old New England chimneys, they really are air conditioners.

This is a bike tunnel that goes under the street.

Last picture of the day. On the right is the river bed (note how shallow the water is). In the center is the bike path and to the left of that is the canal full of water.
